My story

Hey there!

My name is Deirdre Khoo - Chinese name, Li Ern 勵恩.

I was born and raised in a tiny hot box country called Singapore. I moved to Australia in 2015, where my love for performing grew by tenfold.

Much inspired by the performers in the country & on the growing internet, I trained as part of WAAPA's Music Theatre class of 2020, and graduated having  skills in both MT and film & television.

Not long after graduating, I made my professional stage debut as Ex-Girlfriend/Swing/Dance Captain on the Australian Tour of ONCE (dir. Richard Carroll) with Darlinghurst Theatre Company in 2021, which was unfortunately postponed due to COVID. It toured to Perth in 2022 with Black Swan Theatre Company, and then successfully returned to Sydney stages for 8 weeks. I had most recently been touring in the 50th Anniversary tour of Rocky Horror Show as Janet Weiss. I am moving on to A Christmas Carol at the Comedy Theatre as Jess at the end of 2023.

I am constantly excited by new works in Australia, and recently recorded an audio-experience album for RUTH: The Musical by Isaac Shatford as Darla Ren, under the direction of the fabulous Hayden Tee. If you weren't familiar with me, then you wouldn't know that I am also writing a musical with my dear friend, Zara Stanton (Fangirls, Chorus Line), which I hope to introduce and familiarise Australian audiences with my Peranakan heritage. To further prove that I am a jack of all trades, I also previously acted as the Assistant Director to Jason Langley in VCA's production of The Hello Girls in 2021.

Going back further down in history to 2016, I originated the role of Julia O'Brien in a new Australian musical, 2084: A Musical, with music by Nick Choo and book & lyrics by Sarah Courtis. I then collaborated with Nick again on his next project in 2017. 4-in-50: A Musical Marathon, premiered at Perth's FringeWorld Arts Festival, and was nominated for a theatre award.

My credits include Allison Vernon-Williams in Cry-Baby (dir. Chris Parker), Maggie Winslow/Vocal Captain in A Chorus Line (dir. Crispin Taylor), Rosie in Mamma Mia! (dir. Shaun Rennie), Pepper in Maki Morita's Trash Pop Butterflies, Dance Dance Paradise (dir. Amelia Burke), Scotty in Merrily We Roll Along (dir. Brent Hill), Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dreamensemble in Strictly Ballroom (dir. Crispin Taylor), and the Oathtaker in the Wonderful World of Dissocia (dir. Michael McCall).

Alongside my classmate & close mate Liam Wigney, I co-produced a virtual livestream concert Songs for a Future Oz. The organisation has now been registered as a not-for-profit organisation Future Oz Inc., which aims to give back to the society in any way, while connecting music theatre students all over Australia.

In 2020, I was part of the Artists of Colour (AOC) Initiative award as a semi-finalist. I am also a member of the MEAA.
